Leadership Academy 2010 Keynote Speaker: Dr. Christian Smith

Dr. Christian Smith is the William R. Kenan, Jr. Professor of Sociology and Director of the Center for the Study of Religion and Society at the University of Notre Dame. His research focuses primarily on religion in modernity, adolescents, American evangelicalism, and culture. He received his MA and PhD from Harvard University in 1990 and his BA from Gordon College in 1983. Dr. Smith was a Professor of Sociology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for 12 years before he moved to Notre Dame.

Paper Presenters

Dr. Milt Uecker, EdD, is the dean of the Graduate School at Columbia International University and teaches courses on educational philosophy, early childhood education, and curriculum. He is a national and international conference speaker and a contributor to the Christian Early Education and Christian School Education journals for the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI). Dr. Uecker views placing God’s Word at the center of the curriculum as essential to the Christian school movement.

Dr. Todd Hall earned his MA and PhD degrees in clinical psychology from Biola University and an MA and doctoral specialization in measurement and psychometrics from UCLA. Dr. Hall is an Associate Professor of Psychology and the Director of the Institute for Research and Psychology and Spirituality at Rosemead School of Psychology. Dr. Hall developed the Furnishing the Soul Inventory, a web-based measure of Christian spirituality that is being used in national assessment projects conducted by the Coalition of Christian Colleges and Universities, Association of Biblical Higher Education, Association of Christian Schools International, and also by churches and seminaries.

Dr. Todd Marrah is currently serving as Assistant Superintendent and Upper School Principal at Tree of Life Christian Schools in Columbus, Ohio. He has been with the school for 21 years. Todd is also the Minister of Preaching and Teaching at the Amazing Grace Christian Church just outside of Columbus. His dissertation research was an ACSI co-sponsored national study that focused on spiritual transformation in Christian high school students. Todd is also a consultant with Graybeal and Associates and Alidade Research.

Registration is a two step process:

  1. Register with ACSI for the Leadership Academy event Registration with ACSI covers meals, attendance at the event, one semester hour of graduate credit from George Fox University, a polo shirt, a copy of Dr. Christian Smith’s book, Souls in Transition, which will be mailed to you after registration as well as a copy of each formal presentation which will be given to you on a USB Flash Drive. Optional recreational activities are additional charges and must be pre-registered.
  2. Register with the Crowne Plaza Hotel
    Hotel fees include hotel accommodations for the event and transportation to and from the Colorado Springs Airport. Delegates may stay up to three days before and after the Academy for the discounted room rate of $109.00 per night, plus taxes, based on availability. The discounted room rate will be available until July 8, 2010. Reservations made after this date may be charged the full room rate. You may also call 1.877.227.6963.

Academy Format

The Leadership Academy is an interactive professional development experience. Delegates will have the opportunity to ask questions, participate in roundtable discussions, and interact in both formal and informal settings.  

Mission Statement

Leadership Academy provides an interactive professional development experience where school leaders are challenged in their thinking; given opportunities to ask questions and participate in round table discussions in a relaxing environment that promotes the development of next generation leaders.  

Scholarship Information

A limited number of partial scholarships are available through ACSI Headquaters. To be considered, interested delegates should submit applications by May 15, 2010. For a scholarship application call 719.528.6906.  

Dress

Business casual will be appropriate dress for all scheduled sessions. Bathing suites and other attire for your planned recreational activities should also be included in your packing. Warm layered clothing is suggested for this Rocky Mountain climate.

Weather Conditions

During the day, summer temperatures in Colorado Springs can range between 70–90 degrees. Humidity is usually very low. Evenings are cool, with temperatures between 55–65 degrees.

Venue Information

The Crowne Plaza Hotel, the site for all scheduled sessions, is within walking distance of shopping, dining and entertainment. Driving directions- heading north on I-25, exit the freeway at exit #138, Circle Drive, turn right. The Crowne Plaza is immediatley on the left just past the freeway intersection. Heading south on I-25, exit the freeway at exit #138, Circle Drive, turn left and go under the freeway. The Crowne Plaza will be on your immediate left.

►Friday Afternoon  

Tour of ACSI/Focus on the Family ($10)
(Delegates will receive a guided tour of ACSI Headquarters and Focus on the Family Headquarters. There will also be a time to visit the bookstore at Focus on the Family).

Tour of Glen Eyrie and Garden of the Gods
($15) Immerse yourself in the history of Glen Eyrie from General Palmer to the navigators. Delegates will enjoy a guided tour of the Castle and learn the story behind this magnificent estate. Beautiful scenery and rock formations at Garden of the Gods will bring visual interest as you ride through the park on a guided bus tour. Afterwards, stop at the Trading Post for souvenirs.

►Saturday 

Seven Falls ($15) Located in South Cheyenne Canyon, Seven Falls cascades 181 feet in seven distinct steps down a solid cliff of Pikes Peak granite. Crystal clear water from the southernmost edges of Pikes Peak watershed has, over the ages, carved this unique scenic masterpiece in an easily accessed location.

Flying W Ranch ($25) 
The Flying W Ranch is a working mountain cattle ranch that has specialized in western food and entertainment since 1953. You will enjoy beautiful natural surroundings, an authentic old western town, and a mouthwatering chuck wagon supper. After dinner you will be entertained by the Flying W Wranglers’ western humor and vocal harmonies.  

►Sunday Afternoon

Pikes Peak Cog Railway ($35)
Ride the world’s highest cog railway to the 14,110 foot summit of Pikes Peak. Bring your camera, layers of warm clothing, and comfortable shoes.
