Topic Descriptions

God’s Plan, Our Future—Brian Simmons
We in the ACSI family have a simple yet profound desire for Christian school students: a desire for them to become thoroughly prepared, sold-out, full-throttle disciples of Jesus Christ! The plan of God is that all His children be educated in accordance with His truth, and we want to do our part to ensure that type of education. Despite the myriad challenges our schools face, we realize that our role is to walk in faith, knowing that God’s way for us as individuals, as families, and as schools will be better than any of us could ever imagine!

Assessment, Learning and Motivation:  How Assessment Practices Impact our Students’ Hearts and Minds—Kimberly Franklin
How we assess and grade our students conditions them into ways of being that can be at odds with the kind of existence and approach to learning that we hope our students experience.  Even when teachers are aware of this tension and seek to create different conditions for their students, they often find themselves locked into assessment processes that pull them back into a ‘punishment and reward’ paradigm.  This session will untangle the relationship between assessment, learning and motivation, moving the conversation beyond a superficial understanding of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation and towards practices that enhance rather than interfere with learning.

Towards Ethical and Accurate Grading Practices—Kimberly Franklin
Building on new understandings of motivation, assessment and learning, this session will take a closer look at current K–12 grading practices and provide practical ways these practices can be enhanced or changed to ensure they do what they are intended to do—communicate student learning ethically and accurately.  Specific examples of what grades should and shouldn’t include, how grade books can be reorganized according to learning targets, how grades can be determined rather than calculated, how assessments can and can’t be differentiated, how learning can be narrated rather than graded, and how students of all ages can be meaningfully involved in their own assessment will be presented.
